Origins of Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) can be traced back in 1910 to 1920s known as Sewahaji Hospital. In 1956 the name changed to Princess Margareth Hospital. Soon after independence in 1961 it was named Muhimbili Hospital to 1976 when it changed to Muhimbili Medical Centre. Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) was established by the MNH ACT of Parliament No. 5 of 2000 by separation of the then Muhimbili Medical Centre (MMC) into Muhimbili National Hospital and the Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS), now Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). Separation was effected in November 2004.
The essence of separating MMC and MUCHS was to make MNH more efficient become an accredited center of excellence for hospital care in Africa by 2015, provide a conducive teaching environment for training medical and allied health personnel, become a renown center of medical research in Africa, continuously develop its human resources, achieve financial sustainability, promote the aims of health sector reform by strengthening links with other levels of care in the referral system.
MNH is National Referral Hospital and University Teaching Hospital with 1,500 bed facility, attending 1,000 to 1,200 outpatients week, admitting 1,000 to 1,200 inpatients per day.
It has 2700 employees of which 300 are doctors and specialists, 900 registered & enrolled nurses and the rest are supporting operations employees. MNH is organized into seven directorates which are Clinical Services, Nursing Services & Quality, Clinical Support Services, Human Resources, Finance and Planning, Technical Services, and Information & Communications Technology; it has 25 departments and 106 units.

Functions of Muhimbili National Hospital

The following are the MNH functions stipulated by the Act:
  • To assume responsibility for the control and management of any other hospital as may be vested in the hospital under this Act or any other written law;
  • To undertake medical care of out-patients and in-patients in accordance with medical ethics;
  • To stimulate and promote programs for the improvement or advancement of health and general welfare of the people of the United Republic of Tanzania;
  • To assist the Government and other public organizations or institutions in the formulation, implementation, review and revision of health education programs for the benefit of members of the public;
  • To equip and manage the hospital as a national consultant and teaching Hospital;
  • To provide services of a kind normally provided by consultants and teaching hospitals;
  • To act as a national referral hospital;
  • To make provision for places and centres of learning, education, training and research in medical science and any other related subjects as the Board may, from time to time, decide;
  • To carry out programs for the training of health personnel as may, from time to time, be assigned to the Hospital on the direction of the Government;
  • To provide conducive environment and facilitate the training of health personnel by universities of health and allied sciences or any other health training institution;
  • To prepare students for such examinations as may be conducted by relevant competent authorities in respect of subjects included in training programs carried out by the Hospital under subparagraph (i);
  • To provide advisory, consultancy and other services to the Government, organizations and individuals with respect to the orderly development of medical services, health and general welfare amenities in the United Republic;
  • To undertake, either alone or in association with any other person or body of persons within or outside the United Republic, the development or production of pharmaceuticals, reagents, medical instruments and equipment;
  • To provide diagnostic services and services connected with the repair and maintenance of hospital and laboratory equipment;
  • To assist the Government and other public institutions in the formulation and carrying out of measures connected with quality assurance of health services;
To conduct health research and kindred matter;
  • To perform such other functions as are conferred upon the Hospital by or under this Act or any other written law.
Mission Statement It is the mission of Muhimbili National Hospital to provide effective, efficient and high quality tertiary specialist medical services for referred patients from all areas of Tanzania, while providing conducive environment for training and research.
Vision
An internationally accredited tertiary level, teaching hospital offering high quality affordable medical care.
Goals The overall goals for the reformed Muhimbili National Hospital are
  • To become a centre of excellence for hospital care in Africa.
  • To improve the quality, efficiency and affordability of patient care, teaching and research, as well as the income-generating capacity of the Hospital.
  • To promote the aims of Health Sector Reform, including strengthening Hospital links with other levels of care in the referral system.
  • To provide advisory and consultancy services to the government and others on health related matters.

MNH will accomplish objectives by using all available resources to continually ensure best value for patients and stakeholders. MNH shall collaborate with the Ministry of Health (Government), Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUHAS), Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI), Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI), the Dar es Salaam Municipal and other referral hospitals to deliver the highest quality services within existing resources.

MNH is committed to ensure the security of the Hospital. MNH will work proactively with patients, employees, and Hospital security officials to maintain a secure work environment for patients, staff, and Hospital assets.

Service and Policy Development

  • To develop evidence based clinical guidelines for the medical care of patients.
  • To develop standards of care which will be audited.
  • To implement a computerized hospital information system (HIS) to assist in the operational management of the Hospital and provide data for analysis and operational research.
  • To prioritize service development in light of demand and available resources.
